Dehydration & Malnutrition Compensation Claim

Many people in care homes cannot feed themselves and need a lot of help and encouragement. This is usually the result of an underlying medical condition. We all need to keep well fed and well hydrated and this is even more important when looking after elderly and frail people. When residents are not nourished properly it can result in hospital admission and the need for specialist treatment. When this happens it may be possible to make a dehydration compensation claim or malnutrition compensation claim. There are a number of things that care home staff should do to make sure resident a well-nourished.

Common malnutrition & dehydration claims include:-

  • Making sure that food is prepared which is suitable for the resident to eat, for example some people require their food to be pureed because they can no longer swallow solid food;
  • Setting aside enough time to make sure that residents that require assistance and encouragement to eat have this;
  • Obtaining specialist input from Occupational Therapist;
  • Making sure that feeding plans and risk assessments are completed and updated where necessary.
